The Slits were an early British punk band formed in 1976 from members of the groups The Flowers of Romance and The Castrators. Some of the early members included the androgynously named Palmolive, Ari Up and Budgie. In keeping with early punk spirit, The Slits eschewed the conventions of both mainstream culture and pop music in their incredibly loose and eclectic musical and visual styling. Their costume varied from partially nude to exercise clothes to wedding gowns and their dark eyed pancake faced makeup covered gender specific facial features.
